AN OPEN LETTER TO THE MEMBERS OF NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL BRANCHES OF JAFFNA HINDU COLLEGE OBA

Dear Friends,

Vanakkam.

Seasons Greetings from the Executive Committee of JHC OBA-Jaffna!

This is our first letter to the members of OBA branches locally and abroad, since we assumed office in August 2007. We hope to have regular and frequent communication between ourselves from this point onwards.

Dear friends, the ground situation here poses immense challenges to the people in Jaffna in general and to the JHC community in particular for obvious reasons. Despite of these challenges we are committed to uphold the interests of our Alma Mater. It is high time for you to provide your support both materially and morally. We hope we will receive both kinds in plenty.

There are compelling reasons that necessitate close collaboration and communication among all the members of JHC Alumni as never before.

Firstly, the educational community in this part of the world faces enormous challenges in the face of globalisation.

Our community has been giving prime importance to education from the colonial times. Prior to 1956 the primary aim of our educational system was to secure jobs in the government administrative machinery. However, the legislative changes enacted in 1956 severely restricted this option.

This made our people to focus on professional positions in medical, engineering and accountancy fields, which have been less affected by the above legislation. We were somewhat successful in our shifted focus. However, constitutional changes in 1972 has threatened or narrowed this option as well. This made our students to fiercely compete for securing entry to these fields.

Hence, in the past our school played a pivotal role in enabling our students to face the challenges emanating from national policy changes. The success of our Alma Mater is highly commendable in this regard.

However, the recent changes that are sweeping across the globe compel our students to compete with previously unknown competitors all over the world in previously unknown fields of study. The new economic order requires new knowledge, skills and attitude from our students. Unlike in the past the challenges are of global in nature.

To face these challenges, our educational system undergoes a paradigm shift at present. Many changes are being introduced in the content and delivery of our school curricula. However, the infrastructure and human resources required to cater the changing needs of the curricula are scarcely adequate.

Hence, we need to collaborate to create adequate infrastructure and develop human resources for our alma mater to face the impending global challenges.

Secondly, the ethical standards of our teaching community and student community are deteriorating alarmingly. Though there is an array of social, economic and political reasons for such deterioration, we as the alumni of this esteemed educational institution should strive hard to restore this to the highest level.

Hence, we need to collaborate and communicate frequently to share our concerns and experiences. We also need to provide guidance and feedback to one another in this endeavour.

The possibilities for collaboration are of many folds. It could be in the form of direct funding to school projects, sending materials to school, providing technical assistance to school projects, sharing of knowledge in the spheres of student and teacher development (capacity building) and sharing of experience in other relevant areas.

Members of OBA branches locally and abroad may either identify some projects and initiate collaboration or respond to requests initiated by OBA Jaffna. Please encourage your members to initiate communication with us individually or collectively to identify suitable projects for collaboration.

We earnestly request the Executive Committees of branch OBA s to send us activity reports as frequently as possible for us to share with the members of our Executive Committee in our monthly committee meetings. We are desirous of including a regular agenda item in our monthly committee meeting for this.

In the foregoing paragraphs we have indicated the present challenges and the need for solidarity among various branches of JHC OBA in a broader sense. We hope to bring forth specific issues and requests for issue specific collaboration in our future communiqués.

Please give us your suggestions and feedback. It is preferable to communicate with us via e channels. We assure due acknowledgement for all your mails within three days if they are sent to secretary@jhcobajaffna.com

Thank You.

Anpudan.
